Homedics NMS-350 Shiatsu Neck Massager with Vibration and Heat

NOTE: I purchased the version without the vibration from Amazon. com, but the form-factor, shiatsu, materials used, and heat functions are identical.
Let me get right to it: This is a bad product. I usually trust Homedics, as their line of back massagers and pillows are well used in my home, but the neck massager is a godawful piece of garbage. The materials used, particularly around the headrest and shiatsu motors, are so harsh and grating that the former feels hard as a rock and the latter will irritate your skin to no end. The motors themselves are well shaped and move appropriately for a medium-sized neck like mine, but the material covering them is inexplicably thin and harsh. It’s as if they covered the motors in a cheese grater or sandpaper; it leaves my neck looking beet-red.
Similarly awful is the heat function. It’s extremely slow to heat, as opposed to my Homedics chair massager pad, but once it does heat up it gets burning, burning hot and very quickly. There is no way to select the range of heat, which is to be expected, but the seemingly bipolar way in which the heat function operates renders it practically useless.
Avoid, avoid, avoid.

This massager is limited in that it can only work on areas about the size of a human neck. I have enjoyed my neck massages. I am able to use it on my hat-size-small-cranium, elbow, wrist. For my aching back I will need another device.
I am still working out how to rest the collar on my neck with the right amount of pressure without having to hold onto it with both hands all the time. I wish there was a Velcro strap or something to hold it in position as the shiatzu fingers tend to make the device ‘drift’. So far I have not figured out how to use this when lying down or even when reclining as this pushes the ‘fingers’ too hard against the neck.
Very good for the use as shown in the advertisement, sitting upright with both hands holding the massager in position.

I get extremely tight knots in the back of my neck which make my neck painful to move. I’ve only had this thing for a couple of days and I feel better already. I often use it while watching TV or reading. BTW, anyone who complains about the fact that this massager is “too rough” doesn’t understand the principals behind Shiatsu massage. I used to live in Japan and went for Shiatsu all the time. It is supposed to be a tad bit uncomfortable. It is working the knots out! I’ve been pulling this massager into my neck as much as I can handle. I hope that it lasts for a long time.

Heat, vibrate, massage are great. I’ve used together and separate. Would recommend this unit for anyone with neck muscle issues; it works. On the negative side, heat button is push only; hard to tell when activated, until it gets warm; needs light or on/off button. I recommend unplugging it or connect to power strip.

I am very happy that I ignored the bad review (mostly because it belonged to a different product and apparently they are not as identical as the reviewer imagined
) I don’t see any problems with the materials, used the massager 3 times last night with very pleasant results.
The shiatsu thing does a pretty good job on my neck (so it can move again), the heat is strong enough and vibration puts me to sleep. What else do you expect from a $30 gadget? I am buying one for my uncle Leonid.
P. S. Try it upside down – you might like it.
